In 1892 In 1892, the City of Norfolk purchased the 65 acres currently in the hands of Lafayette Park. The park was able to acquire animals for an exhibit in the year 1900. By 1901, it contained 200 animals.
In 1974, the facility was fenced off from the city park and then renamed Lafayette Zoological Park. Although it was fenced off people living on nearby Lavalette Avenue could see the elephant exhibit at the zoo from their homes. People who were new to the area, unaware of the fact that a zoo existed in the location, sometimes summoned the police at the presence of elephants. The majority of the zoo's older exhibits were renovated between 1974 and 1980.
In 1974 In 1974, the Friends of the Zoo was established as a help group for the development of the Zoo. The name was changed to the Virginia Zoological Society in 1989 and became a non-profit.
